Part One: I’m In These Organizations’ Databases
The list below shows the organizations in which my personal information is kept in their databases:
- Westbrook Health Services
- Bank of America
- Old Navy
- Sears
- American Eagle Outfitters
- Anytime Fitness
- UFCW-Union
- At&t Wireless
- State Farm Insurance
- JC Penny’s
Part Two: Detailed Data Analysis
I am affiliated with Westbrook Health Services, having worked for them for the past five years as a Consumer Assistant One.
Initially, Westbrook Health Services obtained my personal information through the job application that I had filled out prior to employment. After my employment date was executed, my employer requested further information, such as my photo ID and valid proof of car insurance for the purposes of making copies of to store in my file.
Five data points that Westbrook Health Services has on me include: test results for TB, a routine test administered every year to employees: negative; my age: 25, including of course, my date of birth: 08/28/83; my weight: 150 lbs; my height: 5’5”; and my name: Alicia Broughman.
Westbrook Health Services updates my personal information by sending out a memo requesting that I bring the list of requested information into their Emerson Office, or simply request that I make an appointment to fill out yearly data sheets by a specified date. Westbrook Health Services is a non-profit organization that gets reimbursed on billing for its services. One requirement for this reimbursement is to update employee information and testing, such as the TB test, every year.
Data collected on me in stored in a filing cabinet in the Personnel office of Westbrook’s seventh street location. All information is kept as back-up information, on paper, in the filing cabinet.
Some interesting data I found that the company stored in my file were test results, such as drug tests that the company conducts routinely and randomly. Statistics including: my past call off information, paid time off that I had taken in previous years and missed time punch sheets. I wasn’t aware that the missed time punch sheets were kept. This reveals the statistics of how many times I forgot to clock in.
Part Three: Analysis of the Situation
The organization maintains a fairly accurate and scheduled system for updating information as specified by the government requesting personal information, such as current address, car insurance and photo ID. The system provides that memos are sent out to employees, me in this particular case, requesting that I schedule meetings to update my information as listed above. Although the company is accurate on this end of the spectrum, they fail at updating their call off list that keeps logs of all existing staff and their phone numbers. Some individuals, having resigned from their positions quite some time ago, remain on the list. In order to correct this problem Westbrook Health Services should designate an individual as the responsible party for continual maintenance of the data contained in this document since the company has a proven high turn-over rate.
Part Four: Try Something New
For this assignment, I chose to access my face book account and see if I could become familiar with it. A friend of mine had opened the account for me. I’ve had the account open for six months, tried to access it once and gave up. It took a great deal of time, but I was able to upload a few photos to my account and add a few friends. I added friends from Venezuela. I still have yet to figure out how to add friends from the U.S. I’ll keep trying and figure it out eventually. If not, on the bright side of things, I’ll refresh my Spanish vocabulary from a few semesters back.
